NORTHERN PLAINS DISTRICT
RISK MANAGEMENT
Bruce O. Bekkedahl
Just a quick note regarding some of the developments and other activities this year that may be of interest to the Board for the Northern Plains Distlict. Please see the following:
1. Starting on a very sad note, we lost a very respected and wonderful friend of hockey in Gary Healy, the Associate Risk Manager for South Dakota. Gary Healy passed away this last year. He had served as the Associate Risk Manager for South Dakota f'or many years and was a good friend to all. He will be missed.
2. Fortunately, Dawn Magee, from Pierre, South Dakota has stepped up to replace Gary Healy in South Dakota and has proven to be very capable and interested in helping with issues in South Dakota risk rnanagement.
3. We now have Associate Risk Managers appointed in all of the four states. I hope to be able to have all of them attend the next District meeting in South Dakota.
4. National screening continues to be a hot topic with the Risk Managentent Committee and with USA Hockey. This will be an item of discussion at our Risk Management meeting.
5. Tournaments, games and interaction with federation teams, from a risk management and insurance standpoint, is also a continued topic of discussion at our meetings. The goal is to ultimately come up with a strong guideline as to how these will be handled and treated in the future and how we can protect USA Hockey members when playing Federation teams. There is no general consensus yet other than as set out in the USA Hockey Annual Guide.
6. I have received a signifìcant number of requests for certificates of insurance naming some of the rinks, clubs and other associations as additional insureds under USA Hockey insurance policies. The process for doing this is set out in the Annual Guide and is also described at a link to USA Hockey through the Northern Piains District website. The process is very simple and should be followed in order to expedite matters. We have been able to handle most of these requests for certificates through email which allows the certificates to be issued within a few days. However, it is important to follow the exact process set out under USA Hockey Risk Managememt Guidelines and get those requests to me with the contracts. Once they are approved they can be processed very quickly.
Following is a list with contact information for all the Associate Risk Managers in their respective states. Please update your records accordingly.
